Constance Garnett and Pevear/Volokhonsky translated Anna Karenina in vastly different ways, but when people read each version, they still had much the same reaction to the various elements. I want to read the Pevear and Volokhonsky version of Anna Karenina soon. Some of this might be in keeping with quaint 1910's translation fashions, but it's definitely not what I would have chosen if I were going out of my way to choose the best edition of Anna Karenina. We will be using the following translation: Anna Karenina : a novel in eight parts / Leo Tolstoy ; translated by Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky. Anyway, I believe that the translator's job is to make the reading experience faithful to the original, but also to always keep the rader's enjoyment in view. Like previous comments, I would recommend the Pevear-Volokhonsky translation of 'Anna Karenina' and any work of russian literature for that matter. I think it's even more readable than Anna Karenina, though I read an older translation of AK which may make a difference. And, since I plan to read it again and again, I'm going to be . I am a third of the way through part two (approximately page 150 in the Pevear/Volokhonsky translation). TM: Having also translated War and Peace and Anna Karenina, what have you found to be unique about how Leo Tolstoy worked in short fiction, compared to his novels?
