Administrar medicamentos es una labor que se repite miles de veces cada día en el sistema sanitario. Aunque pueda parecer una tarea rutinaria, se trata de un eslabón fundamental en la cadena del uso racional del medicamento, puesto que si un medicamento correctamente fabricado, prescrito, conservado y dispensado no se administra adecuadamente podría llegar a comprometerse su eficacia.
¿Se ha pensado, por ejemplo, en la importancia que pueda tener el proceso de la administración de medicamentos en la correlación entre eficacia y efectividad, en especial para algunos grupos de fármacos, como por ejemplo, sistemas transdérmicos, colirios o inhaladores?
La administración de medicamentos, por tanto, es una labor que requiere un control estricto de su ejecución, pero también una planificación meticulosa de todas las variables que influyen en la técnica concreta. Es muy importante que la persona que administra directamente el medicamento tenga un conocimiento profundo de los razonamientos teóricos que permiten esa administración (fisiología de la vía, absorción, etc.), y de todas las variables que puedan afectar a una vía de administración concreta (estado del paciente, tipo de presentación farmacéutica, incompatibilidades, prevención de yatrogenia, etc.).
